Caesar's Wheel
Send orders three letters down the alphabet, then turn through every shift until a runner's message gives itself away.
It's past midnight
The history of secret writing, told through your own hands. Use the great ciphers, then break them the way they were really broken. Pull up a chair. The lamp is already on.
Turn the wheel, or catch a runner and try every shift.
Five chapters, one desk
Send orders three letters down the alphabet, then turn through every shift until a runner's message gives itself away.
Copy out a letter bound for a brewer's barrel, then count symbols and watch E, T and A fall into place.
Write with the cipher called indecipherable, then measure repeated gaps as Babbage did to find the key.
Set the day's rotors, wire the plugboard cable by cable and watch the lamps glow with every click.
Drag the crib along a weather report, find where no letter faces itself and set the drums turning.
Wax seals mark your timeline and every broken intercept joins your record, from Recruit to Bletchley Fellow.
Seal notes with Caesar, a keyword alphabet, Vigenère or your own Enigma key, and print a paper wheel to cut out and pin.
About Us
🕯️ We are a small team of puzzle lovers, history readers and museum wanderers who never quite got over the first time we stood in front of an Enigma. Midnight Cipher Room is our desk, and we built it for you to sit at.
🏛️ Our mission is simple: teach the history of secret writing by putting it in your hands. You do not just read about the great ciphers. You use them, and then you break them the way they were really broken.
🔐 You get paper wheels, symbol counts, Vigenère squares, rotors, plugboards and a Bombe, plus a timeline of wax seals and a service record from Recruit to Bletchley Fellow. When the history is done, the tools stay yours for sealing notes to friends.
🗝️ Every great secret was once an idea only two people could read.
